I’d Like To Thank God, Jesus And My Mom.

A big thank you to Bird on a Pencil for nominating me, especially since I’ve been slacking hard when it comes to blogging, lately! As it goes, I now get to share 7 random things about myself, before nominating 15 other blogs (gulp).

7 things you may or may not know about me…

{1}
I have a twin brother. His name is Ryan (we’re Ryan and Rhye, which is so cute you could just vomit, I know), and he’s about one minute older than I am. We’re as different as siblings can be, really. He has my mother’s golden locks and my father’s dark eyes, whereas I have my father’s dark hair and my mother’s blue eyes. We rarely vote on the same presidential candidate. We have completely different tastes in music. We don’t watch the same movies. Yet, people still refer to us as ‘the twins’ like we’re conjoined and share a brain. Even now that we’re almost 25 and haven’t lived under the same roof for about 8 years. This bugs me.

{2}
I truly believe our cat Luna knocks over glasses just to spite me. She’ll be sitting on a corner of the coffee table all innocent and licking her paws, but as soon as I look away… *bop* there goes the glass. To make matters worse, she never pulls this around Sam, who now believes I’m just incredibly clumsy and try to blame it on the cat.

{3}
During my senior year of High School I was head cheerleader, homecoming queen and prom queen. I was also mercilessly bullied by other girls.
Yes, that happens.

{4}
I love everything peppermint. I also love everything chocolate. But I can’t stand those two flavors combined.

{5}
Taking care of children that a) did not come out of my special area, or b) weren’t gifted to me through court makes me incredibly nervous. I’m always scared I’ll accidentally kill them in some way or another.

{6}
Whenever someone crosses the street when they see me and our pit bull Lucy coming their way, I get this sudden urge to chase after them just to see if they would panic or cry. Please note that Lucy is an incredible coward. I mean, she hides under the porch from our neighbor’s Pomeranian, for crying out loud.

{7}
The number 7 is the unofficial sponsor for my relationship. Sam was the 7th boy I kissed, which happened on my seventeenth birthday, and after we’d been together for 7 years, I found out I was about 7 weeks pregnant.

***

And this is where I nominate 15 other blogs. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to even begin, so let me get back to you on that when I have a little more time and brain activity.

Wednesday Wardrobe: Not-so-mellow Yellow

Sometimes I know exactly what I want to wear, other times I ‘build’ my outfit around a certain color of nail polish, a pair of earrings or certain shoes. Today, I pulled things together to ‘match’ (my clothes almost never match, exactly… ha.) the bangle bracelet my husband gifted to me a while ago. I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed lately, and what better way to lift your spirits than through wearing some cheerfully colored accessories?

Jimmy Choo Youth Biker-Style Shearling Boots (Jimmy Choo, through mytheresa.com); SuperTrash Paradise Dark Blue Ripped Jeans (Supertrash, through welikefashion.com); LOU LOU Black ‘In Vogue We Trust’ Vest (inlovewithfashion.com); CHANEL Suede Quilted CC Handbag Black (gifted/availability unknown); Lovisa Tort & Edge Detail Bangle (gifted/availability unknown); Bee Charming Eye Love Yellow Multi-Strand Bracelet (maxandchloe.com); Lemon Earrings (etsy.com); Nail Polish (Bubble Bath, by OPI)

Sing

I have nothing to say today. So here, have a song I’m currently addicted to.

The 5000 Question Meme – Part 2

WordPress was supposed to publish this one on Sunday but failed, for whatever reason. This is the second part of a 5000 question-long meme that I plan on completing… Some day. So from now on out, the weekends are for memes!

26. Who has done something today to show they care about you?
Sam brought up coffee so that I could drink it in bed and have some me-time, which i thought was very sweet.

27. Do you have a lot to learn?
Absolutely. I don’t even know what the fack I’m doing half the time. I’m hoping that feeling will eventually go away.

28. If you could learn how to do three things just by wishing and not by working what would they be?
– Learn how to reattach buttons (without needing a band-aid afterwards).
– Learn how to speak Italian.
– Learn how to parallel park without denting cars and murdering people.

29. Which do you remember the longest: what other people say, what other people do or how other people make you feel?
How they make me feel, without a doubt.

30. What are the key ingredients to having a good relationship?
Effort, Communication and Trust.

31. What 3 things do you want to do before you die?

– Re-visit Delphi.
– Read all the books in the world (I plan on getting very old).

32. What three things would you want to die to avoid doing?
– Killing someone else.
– Torturing someone else.
– Working for Sarah Palin.

33. Is there a cause you believe in more than any other cause?
No, not really. Every worthy cause should receive the same amount of attention. Unfortunately, we don’t have the time or money to support them all.

34. What does each decade make you think of:
There were like 12 of these, so I skipped over them. I’m sure you understand.

35. Which decade do you feel the most special connection to and why?
None in particular.

36. What is your favorite oldie/classic rock song?
(I can’t get no) Satisfaction.

37. What country do you live in and who is the leader of that country?
Right now, stink bugs are ruling us. Seriously, it’s been horrible.

If you could say any sentence to the current leader of your country what would it be?
Don’t let us down.

38. What’s your favorite TV channel to watch in the middle of the night?
Comedy Central.

39. What Disney villain are you the most like and why?
Ooh, villain? Not sure…

40. Have you ever been a girl scout/boy scout?
Hahahaha… No.

41. If you were traveling to another continent would you rather fly or take a boat?
Fly. Who has the time to take a boat?

42. Why is the sky blue during the day and black at night?
It’s not black, it’s dark blue.

43. What does your name mean?
My full name is a very weird version of Rhiannon (my mother thought making up her own version would be ‘cute’. It’s not), so… Derived from the old Celtic name Rigantona meaning “great queen”. In Welsh mythology Rhiannon was the goddess of fertility and the moon. This name is also borne by a princess in Welsh legends, the wife of Pwyll. As an English name, it became popular due to the Fleetwood Mac song ‘Rhiannon’ (1976). Thank you, Google.

44. Would you rather explore the deeps of the ocean or outer space?
Outer space. Have you ever seen fish that live in the deeps of the ocean? Seriously, they’re all monsters. *shiver*

45. Word association

What is the first word that comes to mind when you see the word:

Air: Breathe.

Meat: Bone.

Different: Pretty.

Pink: Bubblegum.

Deserve: Peace.

White: Clean.

Elvis: Toilet (Oh, god. But it’s true!)

Magic: Sparkles.

Heart: Love.

Clash: Music.

Pulp: Fiction.

46. If you could meet any person in the world who is dead who would you want it to be?
Etta James. She’s dead now, right?

47. What if you could meet anyone who is alive?
Etta James, just in case she’s still very much alive.

48. Is there a movie that you love so much you could watch it everyday?
Yes, Pleasantville.

49. You are going to be stuck alone in an elevator for a week. What do you bring to do?
A week?! Jeez. Okay let me think… lots of books, my Ipod, laptop, phone and crossword puzzles.

50. Have you ever saved someone’s life or had your life saved?
The second one.

The 5000 Question Meme – Part 1

WordPress was supposed to publish this one on Saturday but failed, for whatever reason. This is the first part of a 5000 question-long meme that I plan on completing… Some day. So from now on out, the weekends are for memes!

1. Who are you?
My name is Rhye, and I’m a 24 year old wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend.

2. What are the 3 most important things everyone should know about you?
That, when I’m complaining about someone I love, and you start piling stuff on, I’ll still get mad. That I’ll give you my honest opinion if you ask for it, even if it’s something you probably don’t want to hear. And that I’ll probably pick up my phone at 3 in the morning, should you need me.

3. When you aren’t filling out 5,000 question surveys like this one what are you doing?
That depends on what day it is, if Sam’s off work, what the weather is like, etc. ‘Living life’ would be the short answer.

4. List your classes in school from the ones you like the most to the ones you like the least (or if you are out of school, think of the classes you did like and didn’t like at the time).
I loved English, French and Biology. Hated Algebra, Chem and Geography.

5. What is your biggest goal for this year?
Make Christmas fun for Cole and Sadie, so they’ll start to love it as much as I do.

6. Where do you want to be in 5 years?
If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that there’s honestly no use in looking that far ahead. We’ll see where we’ll end up!

7. What stage of life are you in right now?
I was blessed with a pretty huge family pretty much overnight, so the ‘young family’ stage would fit, even though most people assume I’ve been ‘doing’ this for a long time when they see me walking alongside a six-year-old.

8. Are you more child-like or childish?
Hopefully I’m more child-like. I really can’t stand childish people.

9. What is the last thing you said out loud?
‘Leave it.’ (to one of the dogs)

10. What song comes closest to how you feel about your life right now?
Light up the sky – Christina Aguilera (Lotus is finally here, hooray!)

11. Have you ever taken martial arts classes?
Not really, but I took self-defense classes which had a little bit of everything.

12. Does your life tend to get better or worse or does it just stay the same?
Better, for sure.

13. Does time really heal all wounds?
No, not if you don’t put any work in.

14. How do you handle a rainy day?
By finding little things to smile about. Or I try to, anyway.

15. Which is worse…losing your luggage or having to sort out tangled holiday lights?
Yea, here’s the thing – I buy new holiday lights almost every year. They’re much cheaper to replace than luggage, so for me, losing my luggage would be worse.

16. How is your relationship with your parents?
Honestly? Very strained.

Will you miss them when they are gone?
Yes, absolutely.

17. Do you tend to be aware of what is going on around you?
That depends on what I’m doing. Usually I am, but when I’m reading a good book I zone right out.

18. What is the truest thing that you know?
The only approval you need is your own.

19. What did you want to be when you grew up?
This changed almost every other week.

20. Have you ever been given a second chance?
Haven’t we all?

21. Are you more of a giver or a taker?
A little bit of both.

22. Do you make your decisions with an open heart/mind?
I try to. Not to say I don’t analyze things to death first.

23. What is the most physically painful thing that has ever happened to you?
A broken pelvis. Seriously, ouch.

24. What is the most emotionally painful thing that has ever happened to you?
Losing people I love.

25. Who have you hugged today?
Sam, Cole, Sadie, Claire, Jane, Lucy and Lola (what? I’m a hugger!)

Oh, Hey!

Claire and Jane ‘turned’ one month old yesterday. One month! That is completely insane. Sometimes I feel like they’re only hours old, other times it feels like they have been here for at least a dynasty, but ‘one month’ feels absurd, somehow.

Apparently I started living in the ‘in between’ when they were born and lost all sense of time. I live in between naps, in between driving Cole to school and taking Sadie to the park. In between diaper changes and baths, dog walks and bottles, laundry and… well, more laundry. And then at some point during the day I’ll catch my reflection in a mirror and think to myself ‘Oh, there I am!’

Almost like I accidentally bumped into myself while turning a corner. Sounds strange? Well, it feels strange. A good sort of weird, but I’ve never been in a position where I had to ‘catch’ myself, so to speak. Sometimes I wonder if this is one of those typical new mom things, but my circle of mom friends is still pretty nonexistent, so there’s no real way to check.

Unless one of you guys has the answer?

The Choking Incident

Sadie likes to talk while she eats. Which would be fine, if she talked in between bites, but girlfriend likes to talk with her mouth full. One of my biggest pet peeves, but today we’ve learned that it’s also a choking hazard.

Because Sadie choked on a piece of cooked carrot. It was seriously the most terrifying thing I have ever experienced, especially since she couldn’t breath or talk right from the get go. She choked so hard that we actually had to preform the Heimlich on her. Luckily the carrot shot out right away, but I’ve never been so glad that both Sam and I took an infant CPR course when I was pregnant.

Yes, the classes were extremely boring and no, they were not free, but I would like to encourage everyone strongly to take them. Because you never know when your child might need you to know this stuff.

Seriously, do it.

That will be all for today. I’m still trying to calm myself down with tea.

Wednesday Wardrobe: I Believe In Love & Pink.

So, Christina Aguilera’s new album Lotus is about to come out, something I’ve been waiting for ever since the album was announced. To those of you who know me in real life, this shouldn’t be much of a surprise. I’ve been a huge Christina fan since I first heard Genie In A Bottle and had the pleasure of growing up with her music. Plus… I like her style.

Yes, really.

I like it. Especially the hot pink she’s been sporting lately. I wouldn’t go as far as dip dying my hair, but I do love me some bright colors with an otherwise ‘blah’ outfit. To wit, today’s outfit!

Sweet Crime Off White Sneakers (Pastry, through welikefashion.com); BCBG Kerra Lace Top (harrods.com); Straight Leg Jeans (warehouse.co.uk); Bridgehampton Earrings (amritasingh.com); Sterling Silver Love Pendant (clothingattesco.com); Believe Bar Ring (topshop.com); Lavish Rose Lipgloss (Part of set, MAC); Nail Polish (Chick Flick Cherry, by OPI)

My Day In Numbers: A Countdown

10
The amount of CDs that fell into the mud when I opened the door of my husband’s truck. I don’t know how he stores these things but he needs a new system.

9
Diapers changed so far. I had a blast. Or, more specifically, Claire did. Major poop explosion. I bet you’re so jealous of me right now.
Yea.

8
The times I had to reenter my password on ITunes before it finally let me purchase something. Seriously, I’m all for internet security, but eight times?! Seems somewhat excessive, no?

7
The amount of mugs and plates that broke when Lucy, running at the speed of light, bumped into me while I was trying to put them away. We might need to get her a job as people greeter at Walmart so she can pay us back.

6
People calling me to check if I had voted yet and if not, when I was planning on going. We take voting very seriously in my family.

5
Calls ignored after that.
Because, you know, I have things to do.

4
Little humans demanding my attention.

3
The amount all of those little buggers needed it at the same time.

2
Fingers slammed in the car door while trying to do twenty things at once.
Don’t worry, they were my fingers, not my kids’.

1
Vote.

Are you enjoying election day as much as I am?

I’m Mine and You’re Yours

We adopted our tomcat Julian a couple of months ago from our local animal shelter, a little surprised by the state he was in – which was perfect. No fleas, no ticks, no sneezing or runny eyes, nothing. This little man was in perfect health. We figured he just got lucky, took him home and didn’t think much more of it.

Until this morning, when I received a call from the shelter saying they had been contacted by people who saw Julian’s picture on the website and claimed he was theirs. Apparently they had moved house and during all the commotion that comes with it, Julian bolted. They found his collar down the street and feared that the neighbor’s somewhat cat aggressive dog had him for lunch (no, really. This was their theory).

Still, they kept a lookout for their beloved furry friend, and surprise! There he was, looking all sorts of gorgeous in his shelter mug shot. They contacted the shelter, who contacted me, and I said that they were more than welcome to come by to take a look at Jules. I did ask them to bring a picture, just in case they were simply crazy people who had their hearts set on a cat that was already adopted and were scamming to get their dirty claws on him.

… That happens, right? No? Well whatever, it does in my head.

As I waited, I wondered how I was going to break the news to Sadie if Julian was indeed these people’s cat. Because yes, if that was the case, I would absolutely give him back to them. After all it was obvious Julian had been well cared for and accidents happen. Dogs jump the fence and cats slip out – we’ve all been there.

Anyhoodle, long story short – Julian was indeed their cat. No doubt about it. His owners let us know they would cover all the costs we had made if we would consider giving him back to them, but that they fully understood that my kids had grown attached to him and by now, we had had him longer than they ever did. Basically, they were the most well-adjusted, lovely people I have met in a long time.

So we gave Julian back. And I needn’t have worried about Sadie. Because after explaining it turned out that Julian already had a home and that he would be going back, she shrugged and said okay.

‘Okay? Are you sure? You’re not going to miss your kitty?’ I asked, bewildered. Because Sadie adores Julian and Luna (our other cat). She brushes them and feeds them her dinner when she thinks we’re not looking.

‘Nawt my kitty. Shoolian is Shoolian’s.’

‘Julian is what?’

‘Shoolian’s! Belongs to Shoolian!’

‘Julian belongs to Julian?’

‘Yes! And Sadie’s Sadie’s!’

‘We all belong to ourselves?’

‘Yes!’

Oh, there’s that pride again. Amazing, the things children realize. Julian was never property, he had always belonged to himself. We just got to take care of him and enjoy his company for a while. And now he will bring joy to his other family.

Bon voyage, Julian. We wish you well.
