Speak

It’s 9.15 on a Sunday, and so far I’ve commented on 25 blogs. This might not be a huge amount to some, but it certainly is to me considering I have to write most of my blog posts in about 15 minutes. Because DING! That’s all the time we have for today. Time to feed Claire and change Jane, help Sadie pry silly putty out of her ears, walk the dog and help Cole with his homework.

But this morning was different. After feeding Claire around 6, the two of us ventured downstairs. I kick started the computer and could actually hear it whirring and purring while I stood in the kitchen brewing myself a cup of coffee the size of my head. In a house that is usually bursting at the seems with all the people and animals that live under its roof, this kind of peaceful quietness is rare, and I took full advantage of it.

For almost two hours straight I hopped from blog to blog while Claire was happy and content in her sling. I commented whatever came to me, writing near-novels on some blogs and just a few words on others. And you know what?

It felt good.

It felt good to somehow let people now that yes, I read there blogs and yes, they made me think. Visitor stats are one thing, but comments can feel like a present in this day and age, where WordPress’ like button seems much more popular. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate all the likes I get. But when someone takes the time to actually write a few words, I feel all sorts of special.

It’s been nice, being able to return the favor.

Now, tell me – Are you a commenter or a ‘liker’? And what do you prefer your readers to do? I’m curious!

  1. Thanks for commenting on my blog this morning. I couldn’t agree more with your post. Before I started my blog I never really took the time to comment on other people’s blogs. It wasn’t because I didn’t like them, but just didn’t make the effort due to lack of time or wanting my wording to sound perfect. Now I realize just how much it means to make that extra effort.

I’m a commenter, too! 🙂 still have to decide on my blog topic for today, but I’m liking the support from fellow NaBloPoMo-ers ~leanna

  3. Commenting on blogs is just so much more meaningful than cruising through or clicking the “like” button; and I’m with you, it feels good and I rarely do it, but, I will do it more now. It’s certainly a good goal to have. It feels good to be on the other side of it and get the comments too. I totally get the 15 minute thing. My laptop sits on top of my coffeemaker, which I’m sure isn’t good for the laptop, but unless everyone else is asleep, it’s the only place I can write without anyone touching anything. Also, the convenient location to the coffeemaker just seems to make sense somehow. 😀 And I wholeheartedly agree with Leanna, support from fellow NaBloPoMo-ers is pretty nice.

  4. I prefer to read and comment. And thank you for stopping by to comment on my Asian antiques! I do not think I could comment on 25 blogs a day though but I am trying to socialize – I want to be in a small network of blogs which I would enjoy commenting and reading, and I have just started building that network. Yours is excellent!

  5. I’m typically a commenter, unless there’s truly nothing to say. Then I might just hit the like button. Also, if the other person regularly gets 60 comments, my comment may not add much to the equation. And for the bloggers I’ve met in real life, I make an extra effort to comment on those blogs.
